Subject: Bear Bryant story

At a Touchdown Club meeting many years before his death, Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant told the following story:

I had just been named the new head coach at Alabama and was off in my old car down in South Alabama recruiting a prospect who was supposed to have been a pretty good player and I was havin' trouble finding the place.

Getting hungry I spied an old cinder block building with a small sign out front that simply said "Restaurant." I pull up go in and every head in the place turns to stare at me. Seems I'm the only white fella in the place. But the food smelled good so I skip a table and go up to a cement bar and sit. A big ole man in a tee shirt and cap comes over and says, "What do you need?"

I told him I needed lunch and what did they have today?He says, "You probably won't like it here, today we're having chitlins, collared greens and black eyed peas with cornbread. I'll bet you don't even know what chitlins (small intestines of hogs prepared as food in the deep South) are, do you?"
I looked him square in the eye and said, "I'm from Arkansas and I've probably eaten a mile of them. Sounds like I'm in the right place."

They all smiled as he left to serve me up a big plate. When he comes back he says, "You ain't from around here then?"

I explain I'm the new football coach up in Tuscaloosa at the University and I'm here to find whatever that boy's name was and he says:

"Yeah I've heard of him, he's supposed to be pretty good". And he gives me directions to the school so I can meet him and his coach. As I'm paying up to leave, I remember my manners and leave a tip, not too big to be flashy, but a good one and he told me lunch was on him, but I told him for a lunch that good, I felt I should pay.

The big man asked me if I had a photograph or something he could hang up to show I'd been there. I was so new that I didn't have any yet. It really wasn't that big a thing back then to be asked for, but I took a napkin and wrote his name and address on it and told him I'd get him one.

I met the kid I was lookin' for later that afternoon and I don't remember his name, but do remember I didn't think much of him when I met him. I had wasted a day, or so I thought.

When I got back to Tuscaloosa late that night, I took that napkin from my shirt pocket and put it under my keys so I wouldn't forget it. Back then I was excited that anybody would want a picture of me. The next day, we found a picture and I wrote on it,
"Thanks for the best lunch I've ever had."

Now let's go a whole buncha years down the road. Now we have black players at Alabama and I'm back down in that part of the country scouting an offensive lineman we sure needed. Y'all remember, (and I forget the name, but it's not important to the story), well anyway, he's got two friends going to Auburn and he tells me he's got his heart set on Auburn too, so I leave empty handed and go on see some others while I'm down there.

Two days later, I'm in my office in Tuscaloosa and the phone rings and it's this kid who just turned me down, and he says, "Coach, do you still want me at Alabama ?"

And I said, "Yes I sure do."

And he says OK, he'll come.

And I say, "Well son, what changed your mind?"

And he said, "When my grandpa found out that I had a chance to play for you and said no, he pitched a fit and told me I wasn't going nowhere but Alabama, and wasn't playing for nobody but you. He thinks a lot of you and has ever since y'all met."

Well, I didn't know his granddad from Adam's housecat so I asked him who his granddaddy was and he said: "You probably don't remember him, but you ate in his restaurant your first year at Alabama and you sent him a picture that he's had hung in that place ever since. That picture's his pride and joy and he still tells everybody about the day that Bear Bryant came in and had chitlins with him."

"My grandpa said that when you left there, he never expected you to remember him or to send him that picture, but you kept your word to him and to Grandpa that's everything. He said you could teach me more than football and I had to play for a man like you, so I guess I'm going to."

I was floored. But I learned that the lessons my Mama taught me were always right. It don't cost nuthin' to be nice. It don't cost nuthin' to do the right thing most of the time, and it costs a lot to lose your good name by breakin ' your word to someone.

When I went back to sign that boy, I looked up his Grandpa and he's still running that place, but it looks a lot better now and he didn't have chitlins that day, but he had some ribs that woulda made Dreamland proud and I made sure I posed for a lot of pictures. And don't think I didn't leave some new ones for him, too, along with a signed football.
I made it clear to all my assistants to keep this story and these lessons in mind when they're out on the road. If you remember
anything else from me, remember this: It really doesn't cost anything to be nice, and the rewards can be unimaginable.

When someone says, "no thanks", often times we think "Well I lost that opportunity, that person could have set the world on fire. Aw shucks."

This is false thinking...

Here is the truth...

When that person says "no thanks", we need to know that EACH OF THE FOLLOWING will be TRANSFERRED to someone else:
- Coaching on products and business
- Helping with 3 Way calls, 2 on 1's, mixers, etc
- Celebrating rookie bonuses and trips
- Relationship building

All of these things take a little time and energy - and we can only help so many people... (3 leaders at one time is all you can handle anyway)

So when one says "no", that simply means that we transfer the energy and opportunity into the one who says "yes"...

WE DECIDED TO BE SUCCESSFUL before "a team" was visible/tangible...

We knew in our gut early in the game that we HADN'T EVEN MET most of the champions who would join our team...

We had faith, and still do, that with focused effort and pure motives our paths will cross with those who seek what we offer... and we will partner... and it will be good...

PRESENT THE MESSAGE WITH STRENGTH, AND MOVE WITH THE RESPONDERS.

And now the day job isn't looking as promising with the economic slump, but he's got a guaranteed residual income from his crops to rely upon... his day job co-workers question if they'll even get the "retirement" they were promised - talk about a "straw" financial foundation.

Dad doesn't even need the "retirement" - he never really counted on it... retirement would be a bonus... it was never in his hands to control... he focused on what he could control... investing in an income producing asset (his farms).

If you lost your day job or retirement benefits, would you have an existing, ongoing income stream?

You might not have the ability or desire to buy a farm, but you can build an Advocare business that will pay you tomorrow and in the future for work done today...

In 5 years, what will be paying you outside of your day job?

Appreciate what you have been given... it's the best plan out there.

If you can find better, you better jump on it.

Often I see new distributors try to catch a whale, when there is tuna swimming all around them...

When tempted to pursue a gym, fire house, beauty academy, athletic booster club, corporate opportunity, or organization of any kind, please keep the following in mind:

- new distributors who obsess on the home run deals almost NEVER make it here

- sometimes we must first think small to get big
- cross your street before you cross the neighborhood, cross the neighborhood before you cross your state, cross your state before you cross the country
- those are not FUNDAMENTAL activities or relationships that others can duplicate

- it typically takes some time for genuinely good opportunities like that to come your way, and you've got to have some experience and battle scars before you even know what to do with it anyway
- if you do have an opportunity, find an ally from within who buys into your cause, and they will spread the message

- if you do land the opportunity, just know that FUNDAMENTALS of 1on1's, 2on1's, 3way calls, and Mixers are the ONLY things that will grow it anyway; either YOU or someone within must be prepared to do those things

- so why not focus on FUNDAMENTALS of 1on1's, 2on1's, 3way calls, and Mixers right NOW anyway instead of landing the big fish... big fish are hard to catch, and typically there isn't much meat, and they usually don't taste that good :-)

Go bless people - one person at a time.

Enroll ordinary people in the cause and seek duplication - just like the "Master Teacher" did.

The few lead to the many.

APPOINTMENTS are the #1 business building activity in which you can engage - we re-enforce that concept often...

So if you're not able to SCHEDULE appointments, that's a real challenge...

If you're finding yourself getting "the run around" from people and you feel like you're chasing, etc - then we need to improve your approach...

Here is an example conversation that will lead to "the run around"... (let's pretend you're seeking an appointment time with "Sue")

You: "Let's get together to discuss Advocare - what do you have open in the next couple days - hows your Friday late afternoon?"

Sue: "I think Friday might work, let me talk with my husband Bob and I'll get back with you to let you know."

You: "OK cool - ring me later and let me know."

BIG MISTAKE - it doesn't need to be that difficult... you're now in "the run around" trap... too many steps... life gets in the way... and Sue and Bob begin to assume they know what you're going to present so they formulate an opinion and seek to avoid you... and then things are weird...

IF YOU GET JUST A BIT MORE SHARP, WEIRDNESS AND TIME WASTING CAN BE MINIMIZED...

Here is an improved version of the above conversation that leads to results:

You: "Let's get together to discuss Advocare - what do you have open in the next couple days - hows your Friday late afternoon?"

Sue: "I think Friday might work, let me talk with my husband Bob and I'll get back with you to let you know."

You: "Tell ya what - let's just put down Friday 5:30pm - that way I'll be out of your hair before dinner. If that doesn't work, just call me to let me know... otherwise I'll see you Friday 5:30pm - sound good?

Sue: "Sure - ya I'll let you know if that doesn't end up working, but that time should be good."

Optional Bonus Phrase - You: "And Bob probably will think this is some goofy deal, just let him know that if it was goofy I wouldn't be doin' it, and that I'll bring over some samples that he's gonna love -and tell him you don't need to buy anything, just check it out for me as a favor so at least you can send me referrals - ok?"

Sue: "Of course! Bob does what I tell him to do, so you'll be fine..."

Right there guys - those little things make THE DIFFERENCE here! And the great thing is that those little things can BE LEARNED! You can sharpen your skills here at Advocare. We won't fire you :-)... we'll be patient as you grow in skills...

But make no mistake - the growth and learning will PRECEDE the paycheck...

Now that you and I have the above "skill", we've become more VALUABLE to the market place...

It took us awhile to become VALUABLE enough to the market place to build a solid 6 figure income with Advocare...

I remember writing down this question: "Who would I need to become in order to earn 10K+ per month with Advocare?" - and I was open to getting the answers...

We were willing to hang around long enough, to INVEST time and $ in the education... which led to our desired outcome with Advocare.

YOU can do the same...

YOU can exceed us...

No one is putting a cap on who you can become or what you can do here...

The top paid distributors in Advocare EACH use this principle over and over again... because it helped them reach the top... and they STILL keep using it...

Pride and a thick skull typically keeps a potential superstar from utilizing this simple principle... so that's exactly where they stay... in the land of "potential"... and eventually the blame is placed on Advocare or they rationalize that "maybe this isn't for me"...

The Principle: "3rd Party Credibility"

Don't assume you know what lies below - there are some things I put in here JUST FOR YOU... see if you can find them...

Here are some specific examples of how to use it:

1) Introducing to Crossline at an Event: one of the most powerful utilizations of this principle is to introduce your attending prospects or new teammates to CROSSLINE Advocare distributors - even if it's someone who's earning just $200-$300 per month; bottom line - someone other than you is telling their story, and it almost always provides a powerful "unit of conviction" for your new person.

"Hey Karen, here's someone I want you to meet - this is Chrystal Jones, she's been doing Advocare for 1 year now and her and Mike earn an extra $1500/month - Chrystal tell Karen how/why you got started with Advocare"... at that moment the "magic of 3rd party" takes over...

At some events this past week, some teammates thought it was really important to make sure they connected their teammates to me, BUT after me they stopped making intros - BIG Mistake - the crossline resources all around them were unutilized - and honestly the crossline intros would have served the purpose of building credibility even more than me...

The "CROSSLINE" distributor has ZERO vested interest in trying to convice your new person of anything... which makes them even more credible THAN YOU OR ME sometimes, even if they don't necessary have the big income...

2) 3 Way Call: again - it's ALL good b/c it's someone other than you validating Advocare... utilizing crossline, upline, downline teammates are all good; the key is to connect them to someone who has a similar background or overcame a similar obstacle - connect it up, sit back, and let the 3rd party magic take over.

3) Bonus or Team Call: surprise - it's key b/c it's SOMEONE OTHER THAN YOU (no matter how "sweet" you are) sharing their story of product and income. Let the call go to work for you.

LET ME BE BLUNT: LONE RANGERS NEVER MAKE IT HERE... I've yet to see an "isolationist" build and sustain anything of substance...

Here are some reasons that folks feel they get a "Pass" from utilizing 3rd Party Credibility:

1. Talent Pass (aka "sweet" pass): You're so accomplished in your current profession, degrees, titles, or past athletic accomplishments that surely YOU are giving your prospects and teammates ALL they need. Priciples don't change because of your sweetness, and the "sweeter" you are, the MORE important is is to introduce your normal teammates to other normal people...

2. Information Pass: You've given them all the "info" so what possibly could a persons STORY add?!? Answer: EVERYTHING.

3. Veteran Pass: You've been here for awhile, so you're now "above" 3rd party credibility. Diamond leaders STILL connect their newbies in each of the ways listed above!

4. Competition Pass (aka "insecurity" pass): You are actually "competing" with the other people in the room for a bigger check, more power, getting in the Impact Mag or being a Rising Star faster, so surely you'd not want to connect your new person to the "competition" in the room. Oh my... even if you do sneak in the magazine you'll cap at 3K/month with that mindset.

5. Self Pass (aka "Mars" pass): You're simply sitting at an event beside your teammate... sitting... sitting... or standin' around talking to fellow leaders, while your new person is hangin out...not realizing that the connections before and after the event ARE EVEN MORE IMPORTANT than the event! Get off your duff! Connect your new person or downline teammates to as many people as possible - WORK hard at this with the limited time you have!

Have you EVER been guilty of taking a "pass"? I have. But I've gotten better over time.
